Lactase is an essential digestive enzyme, belonging to the class of hydrolases. Its main biological function is to catalyse the hydrolysis of the disaccharide Lactose into its two constituent monosaccharides, Glucose and Galactose.

Lactose is the predominant sugar in milk and milk products. When broken down by Lactase, these simple sugars can be efficiently absorbed by the small intestine and used by the body as a source of energy.

Lactase deficiency is the underlying cause of Lactose intolerance. When Lactase production is decreased or absent (Hypolactasia or Alactasia), Lactose cannot be properly digested and absorbed in the small intestine. Consequently, it reaches the colon where it is fermented by intestinal bacteria, causing bloating or abdominal distension, flatulence, diarrhoea and nausea or general discomfort in some cases.

Directions
